Reborn Doll Terminology

General Terms

Reborn Doll: A handmade art doll created from a blank kit or manufactured toy doll that has been transformed to resemble a realistic human baby and weighed to feel like one too.

Prototype Artist: A highly skilled reborn artist selected by kit sculptors to paint and assemble early editions of a new sculpt, setting the standard for its realism.

High-End Artist: A highly skilled reborn artist who produces dolls of the same or similar quality as a prototype artist.

Custom Reborn: A reborn doll created to a buyer's specific preferences, including features like hair color, skin tone, and outfit.

Vinyl Kit: A blank, unpainted set of doll parts made of vinyl that reborn artists use to create reborn dolls.

Silicone Doll: A doll made entirely of silicone, offering a lifelike feel and flexibility but requiring different painting techniques from vinyl dolls.

Fantasy/Alternative Reborn: A reborn doll styled as a fictional or imaginative character, such as fairies, elves, or mermaids.

Open Edition: A kit that is not limited in number and remains in production for an extended time.

Limited Edition (LE): A sculpt released in a fixed quantity, often with certificates of authenticity

Sold Out Limited Edition (SOLE): A limited-edition kit that has been fully sold out and is no longer in production. These kits are highly sought after by collectors and artists due to their rarity and exclusivity.

Certificate of Authenticity (COA): A document provided with limited-edition kits to confirm their authenticity and edition number.

Not For Sale (NFS): Refers to a reborn doll or kit that the owner has chosen not to sell, often kept for personal collection or sentimental reasons.

In Search Of (ISO): A term used in the reborn community when someone is looking for a specific kit, doll, or item, typically in buy/sell/trade groups.

OOAK (One of a Kind): Refers to dolls or items that are completely unique and not mass-produced.

Artistic Terms

Painting Layers: The method of applying multiple thin layers of paint to create depth and realism in a reborn doll's skin tone.

Washes: Thin, watery layers of paint used to subtly tint the vinyl and build up undertones or neutralize unwanted hues.

Mottling: A technique where varied skin tones and textures are applied to simulate the blotchy, multi-toned appearance of newborn skin.

Creases: The detailed painting of folds and wrinkles in the doll’s sculpt to add realism and definition.

Blushing: The addition of red tones to mimic natural skin redness, like on cheeks, elbows, or hands.

Matting: The final sealing layer applied to a reborn doll to give it a lifelike matte finish and prevent shine.

Baking: A technique for setting heat-set paints on vinyl parts using a specialized oven.

Curing: The time it takes for air-dry paints to fully dry and set.

Rooting: The process of implanting individual strands of mohair or alpaca hair into the doll's head to simulate realistic baby hair.

Mono-rooting: A detailed rooting technique where hair is added strand by strand, creating an extremely realistic appearance.

Micro-rooting: Similar to mono-rooting, but the strands may have 1-3 hairs per hole to create a realistic yet slightly thicker appearance.

Doll Parts and Features

Cuddle Body: A soft, fabric body used for cuddle reborns, designed without vinyl limbs.

Full Body Doll: A doll with a fully sculpted vinyl or silicone body, including limbs, torso, and head.

Partial Silicone Doll: A silicone doll with a cloth body and silicone head, arms, and legs.

Limb Types:

  • 1/4 Limbs: Usually kits that have vinyl or silicone hands and feet. A special body is required to attach them to the wrist or ankle, allowing for more flexibility in posing.
  • 3/4 Limbs: Longer limbs that extend further up the arm or leg, creating a more realistic appearance while still offering some flexibility in posing.
  • Full Limbs: Limbs that extend fully to the shoulder and hips of the sculpt, offering the most realism.

Glass Eyes: Premium, realistic eyes used in reborn dolls, often for open-eyed sculpts.

Poly Glass Eyes: High-quality, durable eyes made from a type of plastic or polycarbonate, offering a realistic appearance similar to glass but at a more affordable price in more vibrant colours.

Sleeping Reborn: A reborn doll sculpted with closed eyes to mimic a sleeping baby.

Open-eyed/Awake Reborn: A reborn doll sculpted with open eyes, giving the appearance of being awake and alert.
