SCAM ALERT

The reborn industry faces an increasing number of scams, fraudulent websites, and counterfeit copies of kits. These scams are perpetrated by unethical dealers, scam artists, and misleading websites, targeting even experienced artists and collectors. This not only deceives consumers but also tarnishes the reputation of the reborn community as a whole.

This is one of the reason the RAA was created. It provides a way for ethical artists and dealers to differentiate themselves from these scams. We are committed to protecting our industry with integrity.

TYPES OF SCAMS

Fraudulent Websites:
These websites can appear legitimate and sell reborn dolls at unrealistically low prices or display inconsistent product photos. They often use/steal photos of authentic reborn dolls created by legitimate artists but deliver cheap knock-offs that look awful or you receive nothing at all. These sites typically delay dispatching your order, reducing your window to dispute the payment and they will simply block all contact with you when you complain.

Counterfeit Kits:
Scammers send authentic sculpts to be mass-manufactured, producing counterfeit reborn kits that are of lower quality and not licensed by the original artists or companies. They may also duplicate certificates of authenticity. These actions violate copyrights and intellectual property rights, which is why respected artists and suppliers avoid purchasing these kits.

Review Manipulation:
Fake reviews and testimonials on scam websites and seller profiles create a false sense of legitimacy and trustworthiness.

Phony Sellers on Marketplaces:
Fake profiles on platforms like Facebook, eBay, or Etsy list dolls that don’t exist, collect payments, and vanish. They use images of dolls they do not possess but may repeat the same scam with different customers by providing safety photos to secure payment before blocking them.

Payment Scams:
Scammers insist on payment methods that offer no buyer protection, such as wire transfers or gift cards, and then fail to deliver the product.

It is also important to note that many countries do not validate the account names of bank transfers. They only validate the branch code and account number allowing the scammer to use fake names for that account.

Misleading Product Descriptions and Images:
Some sellers claim the doll or kit has certain features when it doesn't. They may also edit and manipulate the doll's images to hide damage and imperfections from the buyer.

SELLERS TO AVOID

Legally, we are unable to list the names of individuals that are known and proven scam sellers online, but within the industry, they are known.

Connect with reborn groups and communities to seek advice and always obtain a second opinion before engaging with a seller. This approach will help you identify sellers to avoid or block.

Additionally, don't deal with artists, individuals or marketplaces the endorse, purchase, paint and sell counterfeit/replica/knock off reborns, dolls or kits. These activities are illegal and constitute intellectual property theft.

SAFE WEBSITES TO BUY & SELL

We recommend two trusted online marketplaces for buying and selling authentic reborn dolls and related items: Reborns.com and OnlyReborns.com. These platforms are dedicated to supporting ethical, legitimate artists and maintaining high standards for their sellers. Both are affiliates of RAA, upholding strict membership policies and actively removing or banning those who violate their guidelines.

REPORT SCAM/SCAMMER

Complete the form below to report a reborn scam or scammer. Once received we will investigate the information provided and add profiles, links and information to this page where it's deem necessary.

DO NOT BUY IF...

  • They sell reborns that are inconsistent in style, photography, or quality
  • They offer reborns at unusually low prices
  • They have lots of reborns listed on their site with many "reviews" for each
  • Claim to have sold many of the same reborn
  • They sell "full body silicone" dolls for only a couple hundred dollars (silicone costs thousands)
  • They use photos of real babies for some of their products
  • They have limited payment options on their website
  • Inconsistency with spelling and grammar
  • Make lots of claims such as money back guarantees and display numerous "verified" badges
  • Have angry reactions to posts on their social media accounts, comments turned off or numerous negative comments
  • Have no reviews or the account is very new
  • The seller requests you pay by via PayPal friends and family (always pay by PayPal goods and services to protect your purchase)
  • The seller is unwilling to send you a safety video of the reborn or kit

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

  • Never pay by a method that you cannot dispute. For example, direct deposit or PayPal friends and family, have no way to be disputed
  • Always ask for a video of the doll or kit for proof of ownership. Scammers are now editing safety photos from other sellers by removing the original details and photoshopping in their own information. To protect yourself, ask the seller for a safety video instead of a photo. The video should clearly show the doll or kit, along with the required safety details in one continuous shot. If they refuse or make excuses about providing a video, do not proceed with the purchase.
  • Always seek reviews of the seller
  • If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is
  • Be cautious if the seller can't provide an authenticity certificate for the doll or kit
  • Many Facebook groups have rules and guidelines for buying and selling. Ensure the seller is following these rules
  • Do not trust people or sellers who post in the comments of other reborn artists social media pages, recommending another artist or facebook group
  • Report and block accounts and sellers who are known for scamming others
  • Be cautious when purchasing from etsy and ebay as the majority of the reborns and kits listed are fakes or copies
  • Never purchase kits or reborns from from unauthorised sellers (see list of websites above)

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE SCAMMED

  • Gather all relevant evidence, including screenshots of conversations, images, videos, profiles, names, phone numbers, and bank account details.
  • Contact the financial institution you used for payment and open a dispute. Even if you paid by PayPal friends and family, you still need to alert PayPal of the scam.
  • Provide them with all the information you've collected and follow up regularly to check if there is any progress.
  • Sharing bank account details with the your bank is crucial, as it helps them investigate the account's activity.
  • Scammers often use multiple aliases, they also have multiple bank accounts and PayPal accounts. Since they rarely use their legal names, it's important to share your experience in reborn doll groups and communities to alert others.
  • If the scam occurred through a website, report it to the platform hosting the site (such as Shopify) and the payment processing service used (e.g., Stripe).
